Current issues
The Dash-8 aircraft are unable to land in some conditions when their weight exceeds limitations. The ILS is only installed for runway 31: Poor visibility and strong easterly winds along with heavy rain mean that the aircraft is unable to land and they will have to divert. This is why there is a need for the runway to be improved-with greater safety at the end of each runway.
Noise is very much an issue at the airport. The first schedule was way back in 1923 with a Birmingham-Manchester-Belfast route. Since then, built up areas have been growing every year, in all directions and right next to the perimeter fence. A major hospital is nearby, as is a college, which is today building a tennis centre at the start of runway 06, practically closing the runway. There are constant complaints in the local papers, even one years ago about the Bond helicopters, claiming a near miss with a dash: there wasn't even one in the sky!
